Piano Rebuilding
We are doing grand piano rebuilding in our own workshop in Le Vaud, near Lausanne, Switzerland.
Piano Rebuilding by FJV Piano Design
A quality piano can be fully restored. After sustaining damage or simply following many years of use, a piano may require complete rebuilding.
This is a substantial process, typically undertaken once or several times over the instrument’s lifetime. For pianos made by prestigious brands, rebuilding is almost always a worthwhile investment for the owner. The cost of a full renovation is significantly lower than that of purchasing a new instrument, while delivering results that are just as good—if not better.

Soundboard
The heart of your piano is its soundboard. When the instrument has been exposed to significant fluctuations in humidity, the soundboard may crack and require repair.
The strings pass over the bridge, transmitting their vibrations to the soundboard. The condition of the bridge and its pins is therefore crucial to achieving optimal sound quality. Replacing the bridge cap (the upper part of the bridge) and the pins is a common and essential operation, ensuring proper downbearing.

Stringing
A piano may require restringing after many years of use. Over time, strings can weaken, leading to frequent breakage and making the instrument difficult—or even impossible—to tune.
For pianos subjected to intensive use, we select more durable, high-resistance strings to ensure greater stability and extended longevity.
Replacing the strings also significantly enhances the instrument’s sound quality. Drawing on our experience working with manufacturers, we can refine the scaling to optimize tonal balance and achieve a noticeably richer, more refined sound.

Action
The action is the most vulnerable part of a piano. Its components move rapidly every time the instrument is played, enduring constant mechanical stress. Made from materials such as wool, felt, wood, and steel, the action is highly sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. As a result, adjustments, repairs, or part replacements are common throughout a piano’s lifetime.
The action is also what the pianist feels directly under their fingers. For this reason, we offer a bespoke service to tailor the action to your preferences—whether in touch weight, responsiveness, or speed.
You will find more information about piano action and touch weight on the dedicated pages of our website : touchweight - action regulation - hammer replacement.
