About the event

François-Jérôme VINCENT explains how to design and balance a grand piano action for a concert instrument.

The attendees will be using both software and hardwares developed by FJV Piano Design to improve a grand piano action.

5 participants will be working on a concert grand piano action:

  • Yamaha - CF3S - 275 - Hamamatsu, Japan

The class covers the essential knowledge to analyze and improve the grand piano action geometry, and parts weighting.

  • Explaining the different terms related to action geometry: hammers boring and geometry, center-pin heights and magic lines, backchecks and hammers tail, strike distance, and the different parts available.

  • Explaining how to quickly set a hammer boring chart, with the right bored lengths and angles of boring

  • Assess a grand piano action: finding the problems we might face, what we can improve. How to make the right choice.

  • Using FJV tools for measuring hammers

  • Explaining the action balancing and touchweight.

  • Using the Key Measuring Device from Renner USA. How to save time when balancing an action.

  • Using our new tool for tapering grand piano hammers with or without shanks.

  • Weighting hammers by tapering them or adding weight

  • Balancing the keyboard

Attendees will get an awarding certificates for class attendance.
